Hairdryer or air-drying? Does a hairdryer damage hair?
Blow-drying is more convenient, but is it also better for your hair? Hairdressers hear this question all the time, so here is a short guide with the key facts to remember.
Hairdryer – yes!
Research shows that drying hair correctly with a hairdryer can be even gentler than letting it dry naturally for a very long time – especially for long hair. You just need to remember a few basic rules to keep your hair healthy and good-looking.
How to blow-dry your hair without damaging it
- After washing, wrap your hair in a towel for a short while so the fabric absorbs excess water – blot, do not rub.
- Try not to comb wet hair. If you have to, use a wide-tooth comb.
- Start drying at the lowest temperature and increase it gradually. Air below about 60°C is considered safe.
- Direct the airflow at the roots first, then move down to the ends, holding the dryer about 15–20 cm from your hair.
- Use heat-protection products that shield your hair from damage.
- Do not over-dry the strands, as this damages the cuticle. Finish with the cool setting.
Also remember: do not go outside with wet hair, especially on cold days – wet hair is more prone to damage.
How a hairdryer can damage hair – avoid this
- An unsuitable dryer and the wrong drying technique can make hair thin and brittle.
- Very hot air is harmful because water evaporates from the hair too quickly and it loses moisture. The protective layer formed by the cuticle also suffers – under very hot air it can crack and break.
- Holding the dryer too close to your head overheats the hair. Keep moving the dryer and do not aim the airflow at one spot for too long.
- Low-quality equipment can also do harm – older technology and uneven heating overheat some strands more than others.

FAQ
Does a hairdryer damage hair?
Only when it is too hot and held too close. Drying with warm (not hot) air from 15–20 cm away, keeping the dryer moving, is safe – research shows it can even be gentler than letting hair stay wet for a very long time.
What hairdryer temperature is safe?
A medium setting (about 50–60°C) for drying, and the cool shot at the end to set the style. Use the highest temperature only briefly and only with a heat-protection product.
Should I dry my hair straight after washing?
First gently blot it with a towel or a cotton T-shirt (without rubbing) and wait a few minutes – drying dripping-wet hair takes longer and puts more strain on it.
Is it better to let hair dry naturally?
For short hair – yes. Long, thick hair takes hours to dry, and the swollen cuticle is more prone to damage during that time; it is better to dry it to about 80% with warm air.
Is my hair dried after a haircut at Haircut Express?
The men’s haircut includes a wash and drying; for women, choose the option with a wash and light styling – the hairdresser will dry and style your hair with a brush. Details in the price list.
