Healthy hair in autumn – advice from a hairdresser
Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but it can also be a challenge for your hair. How can you deal with it?
Everyone loses about 50 to 100 hairs a day, and new hair grows in their place. In autumn, shedding is often more noticeable. Falling temperatures, dry indoor air and changeable weather all affect the condition of your hair, and poor scalp and hair care can make shedding worse. Here is how to look after and protect your hair in autumn.
How to keep your hair healthy in autumn
- Shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Choosing the right products is the basis. If your hair is dry, choose a shampoo and conditioner with moisturising ingredients; for oily hair, choose products that regulate sebum. Use conditioner regularly – it helps protect hair from damage.
- Gentle washing and lukewarm water. Washing too often or with very hot water can weaken your hair.
- Avoid very hot hairdryers and straighteners. Use a low or medium heat setting. You can read more about correct drying in our guide How to use a hairdryer safely.
- Trim your ends regularly. Visit a Haircut Express salon every 6–8 weeks to trim your ends. It keeps hair in good condition and helps prevent split ends.
- Eat well. Your diet has a big effect on hair health. Choose foods rich in vitamins, minerals and protein, such as fish, nuts, eggs and vegetables.
- Protect your hair from rain and cold. When you are outside in bad weather, wear a suitable hat to protect your hair from moisture and wind.
- Stress and sleep. Try to reduce stress, which can affect your hair, and get enough sleep – it matters for regeneration.
If you follow these tips, autumn and winter will be much easier on your hair. Regular care and the right products are enough to keep it healthy throughout the season.

FAQ
Why does more hair fall out in autumn?
This is seasonal shedding: hairs strengthened by the summer sun enter the resting phase at the same time and fall out 2–3 months later. It usually lasts 4–6 weeks and passes on its own; if it lasts longer, it is worth checking ferritin and vitamin D.
How should I care for my hair in autumn?
Moisturising masks 1–2 times a week, a mild shampoo, less hot air from the hairdryer, a hat made of natural materials and a trim of ends damaged over the summer. Oiling the ends also helps.
Do I need to change my shampoo in autumn?
Not necessarily, but if your scalp becomes dry and itchy once the heating is on, switch to a sulphate-free shampoo and add a moisturising conditioner.
Is it worth getting a haircut after summer?
Yes – sun, salt and chlorine damage the ends, and trimming 1–2 cm makes hair look healthier and tangle less. At Haircut Express you can do it without an appointment, at the price shown in the price list.
